Surrounding Area
The small picturesque village of Salthouse is situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, scattered throughout with typical Norfolk flint cottages. Salthouse is nestled between the high ridge of Salthouse Heath to the south, from where spectacular views reach over the coastline from Sheringham to Blakeney Point and beyond, and the salt marshes of the stunning North Norfolk Coastline. Salthouse has the largest cluster of Bronze Age burial mounds in Norfolk and was once part of the thriving salt-panning industry which existed along this part of the coast, hence its name.
Salthouse Heath has an abundance of flora and fauna and is well-known locally as an excellent place to hear Nightingales and Nightjars in the early part of summer. Salthouse Marshes, also owned by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, is a popular spot for birdwatchers who come from all over to observe both common and rare species, including barn owls, marsh harriers, and the rarer lapland buntings and shore larks.
Situated a few miles north of Holt and to the east of Blakeney and Cley, Salthouse is a good base for discovering the North Norfolk Coast. It is just a short distance away from beautiful local villages with boutique shops and art galleries. The seaside towns of Sheringham and Cromer are great for family fun, while nearby Blakeney offers boat trips to see the seal colonies. The award-winning sandy beaches of Holkham and Wells-next-the-Sea are just a short drive along the coast. Salthouse is also perfectly positioned for exploring the many cycle routes and coastal paths this fabulous part of Norfolk has to offer.
The wonderful church of St. Nicholas stands over the village of Salthouse and holds regular exhibitions and concerts. The Old Post Office selling coffees, ice cream, sandwiches, groceries and papers, can be found on the village green, together with the renowned Cookies Crab Shop serving seafood platters, shellfish, salad and sandwiches to eat in or take away. On the west side of the green is the charming village pub, The Dun Cow, serving great food and real ales, and boasting wonderful views overlooking the marshes.
Well Cottage is situated off a quiet lane in the east of Salthouse, about a five-minute walk from the village green and all its amenities. The holiday cottage has a large west facing garden with views across the marshes to the sea. Well Cottage is in a peaceful and much sought-after position in which to enjoy this beautiful part of the North Norfolk Coast.
