Surrounding Area
A walk through the wide expanse of Blakeney National Nature Reserve, managed by the National Trust, will give you uninterrupted views of the beautiful coastline whilst providing a fabulous opportunity to spot the incredible local wildlife. From Blakeney and Morston quays you can take a boat trip to Blakeney Point to visit the largest seal colony in Britain, with over 2,000 grey seal pups born during winter each year. The point is also excellent for birdwatching; keep your binoculars at the ready for oystercatchers, brent geese, ringed plovers and common teal.
Blakeney’s narrow streets are full of charm with gift shops, art galleries and great places to eat and drink, including The Moorings, a favourite of the locals serving “unpretentious British cuisine”. On the south side of the village stands St Nicholas church built between the 13th and 15th Century and curiously with two towers, one of which is open to the public on weekdays for visitors to climb and enjoy the incredible views.
Blakeney sits on the coast road and in less than 20 minutes the Coasthopper bus will take you to the beautiful town of Wells-next-the-Sea, where at low tide, the sandy beach goes on for miles, and the many colourful beach huts backing on to the pine woods are a delight to see. Blakeney is also perfectly placed to access local villages on the Norfolk Coastal Path, with Cley-next-the-Sea to the east, home of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s oldest and most famous reserve; to the west – Stiffkey, Wells and Holkham Estate with an impressive stately home, deer park and award-winning expanse of wonderful sandy beach.
Mays Cottage in Blakeney is set back from the road at the quieter southern end of the High Street and only a short walk from the quay, shops, pubs and a small supermarket. Mays Cottage has a pretty, south-facing courtyard garden and its secluded location makes it a delightful place to stay and enjoy this part of North Norfolk.
