Staying nearby enables the bird enthusiast to easily explore the area without a long drive and to take full advantage of the opening times which are from dawn to dusk. Surely there is no better way of heading back to the comfort of your holiday accomodation than with the sound of thousands of geese flying overhead on a winter’s evening.
An internationally important bird reserve
The Cley marshes provide the birdwatcher with a variety and wealth of bird life during every season of the year.
Purchased in 1926 by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust to be held ‘in perpetuity as a bird breeding sanctuary’ it has now become on of the UK’s most highly regarded birdwatching sites. The reserve consists of reed beds, raised footpaths and freshwater lagoons and scrapes that attract thousands of birds from the scarce passage migrants to the more common species.
There are six hides and the stunning Visitors Centre with its panoramic view of the marsh where informative workshops and exhibitions are held. Guided walks around the marsh are also available if booked in advance and the lovely café provides some welcome sustenance.
